second life walkabout
I spent some time in Second Life this weekend. It’s interesting, and I can see how it could be a diverting source of entertainment. I have to say that from what I have seen so far it is not as well designed as most other online gaming communities. The interface is clunky and difficult to navigate. The visual elements are crudely rendered by current standards. And it’s buggy! I hooked up from a variety of locations, most with good server speeds, and it consistently had hiccups, lags and lockups. Perhaps when I get further into the Second Life world there will be enough engrossment to overlook these shortcomings but from the perspective of a first time user who is accustomed to the level of quality available from other online worlds I was not instantly hooked.
